7 CONTINENTS
Continents and oceans originated when the earth’s crust disintegrated owing to pressure. The residual depressions resulted in water filling up leading to oceans formation and the lingering land masses continued to segregate and led to continents. We thus have 7 continents - Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, Australia and the Antarctica.
Africa was not discovered till medieval times and hence was named ‘The dark Continent’. Africa is the second largest continent covering both the Northern and Southern hemispheres
Antarctica is called ‘The white Continent’ since it is perennially covered in snow breeding algal forms and penguins. Many explorations take place here under the Antarctic Treaty. The climatic conditions are in conducive to humans.
Asia by far is the largest and most populated continent covering multitude time zones and bio diversity with variations. Europe and Asia are together called Eurasia and are separated by the Ural Mountains.
Australia is an island continent comprising Australia and New Zealand. It is the biggest continent of southern hemisphere housing the famous ‘kangaroos’ and ‘kiwi’
American continents extending across the north and south poles are flanked by the ferocious Atlantic Ocean in one hand and the serene Pacific Ocean on the other.
